What Is a Support Group?

Looking for support, encouragement, and comfort in a safe, comfortable environment? Our support groups give patients and community members the opportunity to share thoughts and feelings, coping strategies, and other information with people going through a similar experience.

For many, a support group fills the gap between medical treatment and the need for emotional support. While healthcare providers readily offer the former — and family and friends, the latter — a support group can bridge the gap between medical and emotional needs.

What Can a Support Group Do for Me?

According to the Mayo Clinic, benefits of participating in a support group may include:

  • Feeling less lonely, isolated or judged
  • Reducing distress, depression, anxiety or fatigue
  • Talking openly and honestly about your feelings
  • Improving skills to cope with challenges
  • Staying motivated to manage chronic conditions or stick to treatment plans
  • Gaining a sense of empowerment, control or hope
  • Improving understanding of a disease and your own experience with it
  • Getting practical feedback about treatment options
  • Learning about health, economic or social resources
