What is a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist specializes in the treatment of mental health conditions. Because psychiatrists hold a medical degree, they are one of the few professionals in the mental health field able to prescribe medications to treat mental health issues.

Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems and can perform a full range of medical and laboratory tests.

Psychiatrists use a variety of treatments – including various forms of psychotherapy (talk therapy), medications and other interventions, depending on what the patient needs.

The Prairie Ridge Health psychiatry team works to help restore our patient’s emotional health and well-being. Our goal is to help our patients learn new behaviors, gain healthy skills, so they can develop more effective relationships with themselves and others.

Our services are strengths-based, trauma-informed and individualized to provide the support best suited to you. We encourage you to include people who support you in your treatment.

Our child psychiatry team uses the HEALTH model, which draws heavily from a family-based or holistic approach to child psychiatry. The HEALTH model believes that all systems that touch a child’s life, such as health, education and family, are crucial in approaching long-term treatment.

Our psychiatrists treat children, teens and adults. They specialize in a variety of conditions, including:
  • Anxiety
  • Autism
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Depression
  • Stress-related disorders
