Hands-Only CPR or CCR (Cardio-Cerebral Resuscitation) is a potentially lifesaving option to be used by people not trained in conventional CPR or those who are unsure of their ability to give the combination of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth breathing it requires.

Bystanders who witness the sudden collapse of an adult should immediately call 9-1-1 and start what we call Hands-Only CPR. This involves providing high-quality chest compressions by pushing hard and fast in the middle of the victim’s chest, without stopping until emergency medical services (EMS) responders arrive or an AED arrives to shock the heart.

Help save a life, possibly your own

Victims of uncontrolled bleeding, from any cause, can die within five to 10 minutes. Would you know what to do to stop the bleeding and save a life in the event of an active shooter or disaster where response of emergency personnel is delayed?

The Stop the Bleed campaign was initiated by a federal interagency workgroup convened by the National Security Council Staff, The White House. The purpose of the campaign is to build national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding. Stop the Bleed is a registered service mark of the Department of Defense.

The Joint Committee to Increase Survival from Active Shooter and Intentional Mass Casualty Events was convened by the American College of Surgeons in response to the growing number and severity of these events. The committee met in Hartford Connecticut and produced a number of documents representing the consensus opinion of medical groups, the military, the National Security Council, Homeland Security, the FBI, law enforcement, fire rescue, and EMS. These recommendations have become known as the Hartford Consensus. The overarching principle of the Hartford Consensus is that no one should die from uncontrolled bleeding. The Hartford Consensus recommends that all citizens learn to stop bleeding.

The 60-minute class gives participants the ability to to recognize life-threatening bleeding and ntervene effectively. Participants learn the various ways to control bleeding, using their hands, a basic first aid kit or full trauma first aid kit.

Cost: Free

Further information about the Hartford Consensus and bleeding control can be found at stopthebleed.org

Safe Sitter® Program History:

Safe Sitter® was founded in 1980 by Indianapolis pediatrician, Dr. Patricia A. Keener, after a nurse's 18-month-old choked to death while under the care of an adult sitter. In reflecting on her colleague's loss, Dr. Keener recognized the vulnerability of young children when cared for by unprepared child care providers Dr. Keener taught the first Safe Sitter® class in an Indianapolis middle school. Since that first class of 18 students, over 350,000 young people have completed the course. Safe Sitter® is currently taught in all 50 states and England.

Safe Sitter® is a high-quality program that gives young adolescents the skills to be safe, nurturing babysitters. Parents/guardians are always impressed with the results. Instructors have fun teaching Safe Sitter®.

Safe Sitter® has attracted the attention of the media over the years. Dr. Keener has made numerous appearances on shows such as The Today Show, Good Morning America,  CBS This Morning, and the John Walsh Show. Safe Sitter® articles are routinely featured in an array of periodicals including The New York Times, Newsweek, Good Housekeeping, and Sesame Street Magazine Parent's Guide, as well as various medical journals. Safe Sitter® has been recognized for excellence by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
